June is National Safety Month, and it is a good reminder to think of injury prevention during the summer season. The nice weather can mean more time out and about. More opportunities to engage in activities means it is important to remain mindful of fall risk for older adults. At times, falls happen with no associated injury. Other times it can be more serious.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that over 800,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury. The CDC also provides guidance on what you can do to prevent falls. Knowing how to prevent falls and when to seek help can reduce serious injury and fall related risk.

Here are some precautions they recommend:

  • Talk to Your Doctor
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your medicines to see if any might make you dizzy or sleepy
  • Ask your doctor or healthcare provider about taking vitamin D supplements
  • Do Strength and Balance Exercises
  • Have Your Eyes Checked
  • Make Your Home Safer
