October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Colorado Physician Partners recognizes this month every year because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. One of the best ways for early detection of breast cancer is to get a mammogram. Keep reading for more information from the CDC regarding mammograms, breast cancer symptoms and screening costs.

Mammograms

Surviving breast cancer is higher when it is diagnosed and treated early. Learn exactly what a mammogram is and tips for when you get one done. When it comes to breast cancer screening recommendations, the CDC refers to The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). According to USPSTF:

  • Women 50 to 74 years old and are at average risk for breast cancer should get a mammogram at least every two years.
  • Women who are 40 to 49 years old should talk to their doctor or other health care professional about when to start and how often to get a mammogram.
  • Women should weigh the benefits and risks of screening tests when deciding whether to begin getting mammograms before age 50.

Symptoms of breast cancer

In addition to regular mammogram screenings, knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can help with detection and overall awareness of your breast health. The CDC has a list of breast cancer warning signs that can help determine when to seek medical attention.

Low-cost screening eligibility

As mentioned before, early detection of breast cancer through mammograms is important. Since there can be costs associated with getting a mammogram, find out if you qualify for low-cost screenings.
