October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Colorado Physician Partners recognizes this month every year because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. One of the best ways for early detection of breast cancer is to get a mammogram. Keep reading for more information from the CDC regarding mammograms, breast cancer symptoms and screening costs.

When it comes to breast cancer screening recommendations, the CDC refers to The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). According to USPSTF: 

• Women 50 to 74 years old and are at average risk for breast cancer should get a mammogram at least every two years.
• Women who are 40 to 49 years old should talk to their doctor or other health care professional about when to start and how often to get a mammogram.
• Women should weigh the benefits and risks of screening tests when deciding whether to begin getting mammograms before age 50.
