March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. In the United States, colorectal (colon) cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths and affects both men and women. The good news is that it is largely preventable with regular screening, and can be cured when detected early.

Why are screening tests important? Regular screening tests can find polyps (early abnormal growths in the colon) and remove them before they turn into cancer. Screenings can also find cancer at an early stage when treatment is most effective.

  • What you can do to reduce your risk for colorectal cancer
  • What are the screening options
  • When to get screened and what to expect

If you are over 50, or have a family history of colon cancer, talk with your primary care provider about getting screened. Be prepared to ask your doctor these questions.

Most health insurance plans help pay for colorectal cancer screenings, but check with your plan before scheduling.
